Referrals
Helpful information and guidance for patients waiting for a hospital consultation, treatment or surgery.
My Planned Care
Millions of patients on the waiting list for NHS care will be able to access support and check wait times at their fingertips thanks to a new online platform called My Planned Care.
The platform will allow patients and their carers to access information ahead of their planned appointment, operation or treatment through the touch of a button.

Hospital Referrals
I would like to be referred
You will need an appointment with a clinician to get a referral to a specific organisation. Please book an appointment with your usual GP to discuss referrals.
I have been referred
If you were referred through the NHS e-Referral Service and have a booking reference number and access code, you can check, change or cancel your referral by visiting the NHS Refer website.
You can also manage referrals made by the NHS e-Referral Service via your NHS app.
If you have queries, questions or concerns about a hospital appointment, you can contact the hospital's Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) which can provide confidential advice, support and information on health-related matters.
At your hospital appointment
Your GP may not be able to advise you further once you've seen a hospital specialist. Here are some questions that are important to ask before you leave the hospital.
- When and how will I find out about my test results?
- Do I need a new prescription? (you may need to collect from the hospital pharmacy)
- Will I receive a discharge letter or Care Plan?
- Do I need a follow up appointment or onward referral?
- What are the contact details of the department if I have any queries?
I've had my appointment - what now?
The hospital will share the necessary information from your appointment with us. They will also let us know if there is anything we need to do for you.
Autism & ADHD Referrals and Shared Care Agreements
Adult ADHD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) & ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) Referrals
The Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Care Board (HWEICB) have an interim complexity threshold for adult ADHD and ASD referrals to help manage the extreme demand. Therefore, referrals for adult ADHD and ASD assessment on the NHS can only be made where the patient has a complex medical need.
If you do not meet the eligibility criteria set, you can use the NHS ‘Right to Choose’ pathway.

Child ADHD & ASD – NHS Referral
Book an appointment with your child’s usual GP. Due to demand, the current waiting times are about 3 years.
Due to demand the current waiting times are about three years, although this number changes regularly.
Treatment and Medication Under a SCA
Treatment and medication following an ADHD or ASD diagnosis will be the responsibility of the diagnosis provider unless a shared care agreement is in place.
Adult ADHD and ASD Diagnoses
We do not accept shared care agreements for adults with ADHD.
Child ADHD & ASD Diagnosed via NHS
We are only able to take over prescribing of ADHD or ASD medication which has been started by an NHS service once we have an NHS Shared Care Agreement. This is due to guidelines set by the HWEICB. You can ask your diagnosis provider for a shared care agreement to be sent.
The practice is not required to accept shared care agreements, but we can do so at our discretion.
Child ADHD & ASD Diagnosed Privately
You may choose to be referred to a Private Provider for your ADHD or ASD assessment due to the long waiting times for an NHS appointment, or simply out of preference. In this instance, the prescribing and monitoring of any medication must continue under the care of the Private Provider.
To receive treatment/medication via the NHS the patient must have an NHS diagnosis. You can obtain an NHS diagnosis by using ‘Right to Choose’.
